“Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.” -Dr. Maya Angelou

We Are Together

Inspired by a workshop and subsequent conversation with music educator, singer, and songwriter Sarah Tullock, this melody came to me as I was driving my child to school one gloomy March day. The words took shape quickly, and I recorded it as soon as I got to work.

Show Me Love

This song, originally written and recorded by Hundred Waters, encapsulates my love of close three-part harmony and songs with a message. Its simplicity and brevity have inspired my own songwriting as well as my work with my students in the years since I first recorded this cover.

Slow Down

I wrote this while walking my dog one day in 2017. I recently came across my initial recording and have started singing it to myself when I need the reminder. I re-recorded it in 2026—this time without the dog collar and traffic noise in the background.

Loves Me Like a Rock

In June and July 2021, I took advantage of the low COVID caseload in NYC as well as the fully vaccinated status of some of my closest singer friends. For this summer project, I transcribed a few songs from the Wailin’ Jennys album Fifteen—an album of covers to celebrate the band’s 15th anniversary. This particular song features the voices of Madolyn Accola (soprano) and Sarah Garza (alto) alongside myself on the mezzo melody.

Opening Scene

In the fall of 2025, I was asked to create original music for an art and film installation entitled Borderlands: 1001 Nights with Moon. The project was devised and presented by a local organization called Treewild, and it took place at sunset in the woods of Shelburne Farms. This project marked the first time I wrote on commission.

Ella’s Song

Bernice Johnson Reagon, one of the founding members of the group Sweet Honey in the Rock, wrote this song in honor of the work of civil rights activist Ella Baker. My interpretation here is one I share with my middle and high school students, inviting them to join me in questioning the ways in which we can be allies and activists rather than rest in the comfort of our own lived experiences.
